PANTS- OPTIONALITY A GOOD THING — JUST ASK THE FINNS
Spending more time at home can engender a casual attitude toward pants, and according to an increasingly popular Finnish concept, that’s A- OK. Kalsarikännit, a. k. a. päntsdrunk, is “the feeling when you’re going to get drunk home alone in your underwear — with no intention of going out,” says This is Finland’s website. The idea is entrenched in the culture and a 2018 book by Miska Rantanen extols its pleasures. The guide — titled Päntsdrunk:
The Finnish Art of Drinking at Home. Alone. In Your Underwear. — explains that Finns started drinking in their underwear to cope with long, dark winters when going out seemed unpleasant. Rather than a manifestation of depression, päntsdrunk is about celebration. Moderation is key. “Päntsdrunk doesn’t demand over-the-top arrangements. Affordability and democracy are its hallmarks,” Rantanen writes.
