January 15, 1841
Stanley Cup donor Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston, was born in London, UK. During his first winter in Canada in 1889, Lord Stanley, then governor general of Canada, attended his first hockey game with his family. They became fans and his children quickly took up the sport, becoming amateur hockey
players. In 1892, Lord Stanley decided to donate a trophy to be awarded to the top ice hockey
