Porsche marks 25 years of Boxster

- Alex Reid

Porsche’s groundbreaking Boxster sports car is 25 years old and to mark the occasion the automaker has released a special edition model with numerous throwbacks to several Boxster models.

When the Boxster was first unveiled in 1997, it was an instant hit, quickly becoming the brand’s best-selling model — until the Cayenne was introduced a few years later. the sales success was largely the result of its sub-$40,000 price tag, but the Boxster also had good looks and great performance.

the Boxster is no longer the best-selling vehicle in the stable — that honour goes to Porsche’s SUV lineup — and it’s now part of the “718” lineup. however, when it comes to performance, it’s still a heavy hitter.

the “Boxster 25 years,” as it’s officially known, has numerous throwbacks to the original Boxster prototype shown at the 1993 Detroit auto Show, including 20-inch five-spoke gold wheels and a red interior. the vehicles feature special badging, and are numbered to 1,250.

Based on the 718 Boxster gts 4.0, the special edition uses the normally aspirated 4.0-litre flat six engine that produces 394 horsepower, connected to either a sixspeed manual or Porsche’s seven-speed “PDK” dual-clutch automatic transmission. top speed is 293 km/h, while the zero-to-100 km/h run takes just four seconds.

it is priced at $106,500, some $10,000 more than the gts 4.0 model.
