Solemn occasion moves online
The 76th anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz death camp by Soviet troops on Wednesday was marked online with speeches by survivors, Poland’s President andrzej Duda and israeli and Russian diplomats, as well as a debate on the Holocaust’s influence on children. Survivors and museum officials say they fear the pandemic could end the era where auschwitz’s former prisoners, most now in their 80s and 90s, can tell their own stories to visitors on site.
