Academy Award hopefuls available to stream

Two Oscar hopefuls are opening on Canadian small screens this week.

dear Comrades, from russian writer-director Andrey Konchalovs­kiy, is a dramatic retelling of the Novocherka­ssk massacre, in which a strike at a factory led to use of force by the army that left at least 26 people dead. events are viewed through the eyes of an official whose faith in the Communist Party is shaken by what she witnesses.

Two of us, from Francebase­d Italian director Filippo Meneghetti, is the story of two elderly women, Nina (barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) who live in separate apartments on the top floor of a building and have secretly been lovers for decades. Nina suggests they move to rome, but before that can happen an unforeseen event changes their relationsh­ip.

The academy will release a short list of 15 internatio­nal films on Feb. 9. And the Oscar ceremony will be held on April 25. both films are available in Canada through on-demand platforms including digital TIFF bell Lightbox.
