ON THIS DAY
February 15, 1965 – Canada’s new flag was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Parliament Hill. Its adoption was the culmination of many years of discussions, hundreds of designs, and the heated Great Flag Debate in Parliament. Before 1965, Canada did not have an official flag and instead used Britain’s Union Jack or the Canadian Red Ensign. The story of the creation of the new flag is told in a Heritage Minute.
