JAILED MAFIOSO WINS RIGHT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC IN CELL

-

A Mafia boss who has been in solitary confinement for more than 20 years has the right to listen to music in his cell, an Italian court has ruled. domenico Strisciuglio, 48, was told he could not have a Cd player in his cell in Sassari, Sardinia. He appealed and the local court ruled listening to music was a fundamental human right, noting Strisciuglio, a Mafia boss from the southern region of Puglia, could access several television channels, none of which would satisfy “someone who has an interest in listening to music.” The mafioso was jailed in 1999 for murder and other crimes. Italy has strict prison rules known as Article 41-bis of the Prison Administration Act, that allow wardens to suspend certain regulations in order to cut inmates off completely from their criminal associates. The court ruled that despite his violent past, he had “the right to pursue cultural activities.” In 2019, he won an appeal to watch TV past midnight.
