The only new condo community directly on the Hurontario LRT
Purchasers at Edge Towers in Mississauga’s newest master-planned community shouldn’t have trouble finding their way home. A light installation on each of its three towers will shoot upwards in the evening, sending a signal.
The project is located at 24 Elm Dr. W., walking distance to Mississauga’s downtown corridor, Square One Shopping Centre, restaurants and the Cooksville Go Train Station. Once it’s completed — phase 1 and 2 will be done by 2022 and 2022, and phase 3 by 2024 — the community will bring more than 1,300 suites to the area.
“If people work in Toronto and can’t afford Toronto, it’s such an easy commute to the city,” says Angela Marotta, the sales and marketing director for Solmar Development. The 30-yearold family-run company was founded by Angela’s father, Benny Marotta. “We are the only new condominium community located directly on the Hurontario LRT.”
Save for two just-released penthouses in the second building, Edge Towers 1 and 2 are sold out. The third and newest tower, Oro — Italian for gold — has three lavish penthouses, called the Onyx suites, on offer.
Oro’s podium contains 13 of the tower’s 50 storeys. Doors leading from the 13th floor open onto an outdoor garden with trees, a pavilion, a lounge area and barbecues, says Marotta. There is more than 19,000 square feet of outdoor space on the property.
All three of the buildings feature a state-of-the-art gym, a movie theatre with cushy seats, and a games room.
Oro, with its 24-hour concierge, is opulent and hotel-like, says Marotta, complete with Romanesque pillars, coffered ceilings dripping with chandeliers, expansive windows and white marble floors. Dochia Design, which oversaw the interiors throughout the buildings, have worked conversation areas into the lobby to encourage residents to linger.
Designed by Roy Varacalli of Burke Varacalli Architects, the development’s esthetic is grid-like and geometric, wholly different from the firm’s curvier Absolute Towers a few blocks away; nicknamed “the Marilyn Monroe,” they won the Best Tall Buildings in the Americas award in 2012, from the Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat group, based in Chicago.
At Edge Towers, going all glass was not an option, says Marotta. “When you look at New York City with those beautiful 1920s oldschool towers, a lot of them are pre-cast concrete,” a low-maintenance material that she feels imparts “quality and substance.”
The penthouses start at $1.4 million. In Tower 2, the Tiffany Stone unit is 1,392 square feet, with two bedrooms and a study; Moonstone at 1,423 square feet, has three bedrooms.
In the Oro tower, the three Onyx penthouses are 1,850 square feet with three bedrooms and a study. Here, separate, airy foyers offer a gracious sense of arrival. They also have three balconies, off the master bedroom, a second bedroom and the living area, says Marotta.
“There is so much natural light coming into these penthouses,” she adds. “And the Onyx is so large, it can easily accommodate a family. You’ve got a separate dining room and a large living space,” she says, adding, “These are on corners, so they offer unobstructed views across the city into Toronto.”
Other details include energy-efficient windows, smooth ceilings, doors with brushed nickel hardware and generous baseboards and mouldings.
Spa-style bathrooms sport quartz or marble countertops, some with deep soaker tubs. Gourmet kitchens have islands with large, upgraded Fisher & Paykel appliances.
“All of the kitchens have islands and sitting areas, apart from the kitchen space,” says Marotta. “The Onyx has an electric fireplace and is roughed-in for central vacuum, which is not common in condos,” says Marotta. “We always design a condo we would live in.”
