The Supreme Court ruled that the Canadian Bill of Rights did not apply to the Indian Act section that determined Aboriginal

women married to non-status Indians lost their Indian status.

Activist Jeannette Corbiere Lavell had challenged the Indian Act claiming it discrimina­ted on the basis of sex, a Bill of Rights

violation.
