‘An utter tragedy and a black eye for Canada’
Re: ‘Catastrophe’ in Afghanistan: Canada rescuing only a fraction of interpreters, NGO says, Tom Blackwell, Aug. 25; and ‘We wished we could have stayed longer’: Canada’s last military flight leaves Kabul, days before Aug. 31 deadline, Christopher Nardi, Aug. 27
It is speculated only a small portion of those who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan have been rescued from the Taliban.
In reality, those still stranded in Afghanistan should now be safe in Canada. This is an utter tragedy for those brave people and a black eye for Canada. Justin Trudeau’s assertions that the Canadian government was doing everything it could for these people was simply empty words.
Rather than campaigning for re-election, he and cabinet ministers Marc Garneau, Marco Mendicino and Harjit Sajjan, who were responsible for this disaster, should be ashamed to show their faces in public. Furthermore, they should resign. Bob Erwin, Ottawa
At last the difference between Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Erin O’toole is clearly shown by O’toole’s statement, “I would never abandon people like Mr. Trudeau has.”
O’toole was speaking about Trudeau’s abandonment of our Afghani partners, but it should also apply to Trudeau’s abandonment of our Aboriginal people’s needs, our energy sector, and our respect for democracy within Parliament. Trudeau has abandoned Canadians and Canadian values while seeking “the impossible dream” of a united, pollution-free world of perfect equality for all.
In doing so he has been a poor leader. Jonathan Usher, North York, Ont.
