At the Second Battle of Ypres, Belgium, the Canadian 13th Battalion, despite intense shelling and exposure to chlorine gas, stood firm until reserves were moved up the following day. The French troops, who were directly hit by the gas concentrat­ion, had fled. It was the first major battle fought by Canadian troops in the First World War.
