Orville Redenbacher avocado oil popcorn ‘a new tasty snack for all customers’

- CHANTAL EUSTACE

There’s a whole new way to enjoy movie-time munching.

The latest microwave popcorn from Orville Redenbacher is made with 100 per cent avocado oil and seasoned with sea salt. It’s full of taste but contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Or as their website states: it’s “simply extraordinary.”

The delicious take on classic popcorn launched in Canada in February and so far, it’s been flying off the shelves, says brand spokesperson Julie Melanson.

“With the launch of this new product, we have stepped outside of the traditional norm of buttered popcorn to support the growing trend towards alternative oils,” shares Melanson.

“Alternative oils like avocado oil have become increasingly popular among Canadians — and we’re so excited to grow our product offering and introduce a new tasty snack for all customers. Light and fluffy with just the right combination of sea salt and avocado oil, this product is one of our most tasty to date.”

Online reviews aren’t holding back either.

“I found [Orville Redenbacher] avocado oil popcorn to be tasty, flavourful, not overly salty, and a beautiful texture. Thank you for making such a great product!” shares one popcorn-lover. Another writes: “Even my picky husband loves the flavour!”

Avocado oil popcorn is the most recent addition to the company’s full roster of beloved popping options like microwave kettle corn, a sweet and savoury choice, or more subtle flavours like Simply Salted, and their ever-popular Extra Buttery product. It’s a nod to the classic combination of popcorn-noshing and movie-watching, for easy enjoyment in the comfort of your own home.

“Popcorn has been an integral part of the movie-night experience for generations, and Orville Redenbacher has been at the forefront,” emphasizes Melanson.

“We know how important spending quality time and making memories is for a family, and we’re grateful to play a role in that for millions of Canadians.”

Founded more than 50 years ago, the iconic popcorn brand takes quality popping seriously with a unique heritage and history.

It all began in 1907 when the company’s namesake Orville Redenbacher was born on a farm in Indiana. By the time he was just 12, Redenbacher was growing his own popping corn, something that turned into a passion and business, allowing him to save for college where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Purdue University.

In the 1940s he began raising popcorn for the supermarket trade and a few decades later, he and his business partner Charles Bowman had perfected their popcorn hybrid: light and fluffy with hardly any unpopped kernels — and a great taste too. (It achieved a 44:1 ratio in popped to unpopped kernels.)

“You’ll like it better or my name isn’t Orville Redenbacher,” he famously promised customers.

With his signature glasses, white hair and bow tie, the charismatic entrepreneur became a television personality in his own right, appearing in popular commercials for the brand — sometimes with his grandson, Gary.

“In addition to its amazing taste, what sets Orville Redenbacher apart is its rich history,” notes Melanson. “Set out to make the best quality popping corn the world has ever seen, the legendary Orville Redenbacher perfected and shared his love of agriculture creating his special kernel in 1965.”

Nowadays, customers continue to benefit from this legacy, she adds.

In addition to new product launches, the company encourages customers to consider innovative ways to enjoy their products with a ready supply of helpful articles and tips regularly shared online. They’ve also got recipes for creative snacks to help inventive grazers get inspired, like popcorn party mix, perfect for summer road trips.
