PROPOSALS BEND TO TRADITION

-

What knee should you propose on? And what’s behind the tradition, anyway? Custom has it that when someone’s set to propose, they kneel and offer their sweetie a ring box, which they then open and pop the question. Most people get down on the left knee because they’re right-handed, wedding officiant and planner Keith Willard told Reader’s Digest. That said, proposing on your right knee is fine — especially if you’re left-handed and it’s more comfortable. Willard said the ritual may have its roots in medieval times, when knights bowed before noblewomen to express servitude and respect. “It places the proposer in a position of submission,” he said. “Their whole life is now in the other’s hands, with the hope that the other will be kind and loving.”
