Laith Marouf, an Ottawa darling

- Vivian bercovici

ISOLATED YOUNG PEOPLE RARELY LEAD TO HAPPY ENDINGS.

— MADDEAUX

Laith Marouf, who is now an international household name, seems to have had a bad week. After his many antisemitic Twitter rantings became a source of controversy for Ottawa, his government contract was suspended. Explaining why he locked his Twitter account, he blames three prominent “Zios” myself included, who he says were “directing their attack dogs” to him.

That’s the first I’d ever heard of Marouf, although I quickly learned that he is considered to be an “anti-racism” expert by the Canadian government, in particular Diversity and Inclusion Minister Ahmed Hussen. Turns out, though, that Marouf has many admirers in Ottawa.

Community Media Advocacy Centre, or CMAC, which lists Marouf and his wife, Dr. Gretchen King-marouf, as the only principals, is the entity retained by Hussen’s department.

to CMAC since 2016 is $133,000 from Heritage Canada, which was approved in April, 2022. This fee was for a series of anti-racism seminars led by Marouf, apparently for Canadian media.

Also a big fan of Marouf’s work is the CRTC, which has awarded him upward of $500,000 in contracts since 2016, according to data compiled by telecoms consultant Mark Goldberg. Additionally, his wife has received at least one SSHRC “scholarship” grant.

To many Canadians, one would hope, this guy and his views would be considered fringe and dangerous. But not so in official Ottawa. Policy is being radically rewritten in every government department to reflect the woke values celebrated by our prime minister and his team.

Critical Race Theory refracts every issue through a race-based prism. If a person is white, they are, by definition, privileged oppressors. Anything they have achieved is due to their “whiteness.”

Jewish people — who are not a race but, rather an ethnic/religious group — are, according to some CRT adherents, not just any privileged, white oppressor, no sirree. Jews are at the apex of the CRT oppression and privilege pyramid. CRT proponents deem Jews to be “white,” which they are not. Some may be but it is not the group’s defining trait by a long shot.

Once the “whiteness” of Jews is accepted, then many CRT advocates point to the fact that Jews are overrepresented in professions, arts and business. That, then, is used as evidence of their particularly oppressive, exploitive nature.

From colonial, oppressive whiteness, it’s easy to see why many CRT adherents vilify Israel, or “Zio dogs”, as Marouf does. Their “colonialism” makes them the very definition of oppressors. Their “whiteness” makes them racist. And, Voila. You have an ideological and academic basis for spreading antisemitism and pretending it’s anything but.

Which brings us back to Minister Hussen and why his handling of the matter has been so casual. According to Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, he had made Hussen aware of this issue some time before it became public. Whenever that happened it seems to have made no impression on Minister Hussen.

What we do know — thanks mostly to Goldberg’s blog and Twitter posts — is that he has been following and writing about Marouf since April.

Initially, Hussen carried on blithely, until the public attention became too much for him to ignore. His statements purporting to address the fiasco were cowardly. In the first one, he pretended to know nothing about Marouf, who — oddly — he did not even identify by name. Hussen said he would “rectify” things. Which was a lame attempt to dodge accountability.

His non-statement was quickly followed by another a day later when he said it was all a terrible misunderstanding that was attributable to a botched “process” in the department. Shamefully, the minister pointed his finger at the bureaucrats in his madeup ministry. CMAC, Hussen assured Canadians, would no longer receive government funds.

Likely responding to pressure from their constituents, Ya’ara Saks and Anthony Housefather, Liberal MPS representing ridings with significant Jewish populations, incomprehensibly commended and supported Minister Hussen for this “whome?” approach, trying to distract from his own culpability and that of his party.

Others were less impressed.

Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, laced into Hussen:

“Mr. Minister: You are taking us for fools. You are calling on CMAC to answer ‘how they came to hire Laith Marouf’? Are you not aware that he and his wife Gretchen King *are* CMAC? That they and CMAC share the same address? That it was you and Marouf who announced this program?”

Promotional material for Marouf’s “anti racism” sessions included a superlative testimonial from Minister Hussen.

We know that Marouf and his wife have received more than hundreds of thousands of grants and “fees” since 2016 from CRTC, Heritage Canada, and I bet there are more.

We know that this rabid hater — on the record for maligning French and indigenous Canadians — but saving his most toxic treatment for Jews, has a public record of hate dating to at least 2002.

This man did not become Ottawa’s darling by accident.
