GROSSO CELEBRATING SUPER CUP WIN WITH JUVENTUS

-

Canada’s Julia Grosso helped Juventus lift the Italian women’s Super Cup on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Roma.

It was the fourth Super Cup win for Juventus. The match pits the Serie A champion against the Italian Cup-holder.

Juventus went ahead in the 12th minute on an own goal by Canadian Evelyne Viens on a damp day at the Stadio Giovanni Zini. It came during a goalmouth melee.

Roma tied the game in the 28th minute on a goal by Japanese international Saki Kumagai. French midfielder Maelle Garbino put Juventus ahead in the 54th minute.

Grosso, a 23-year-old midfielder from Vancouver, has 47 caps for Canada.

Viens, a 26-year-old from L’ancienne-lorette, Que., has 22 caps.

Fans, players and coaches paid their last respects in Brazil to Mario Zagallo, the first person to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager. He died Friday at age 92.

Zagallo was seen by many as the embodiment of the Brazilian national team. His flair and skills gained him a global following.

Zagallo won two World Cups as a player (1958 and 1962), one as a coach (1970), and another as an assistant coach (1994).

Australia striker Sam Kerr sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a warm-weather training camp with the Chelsea women’s team in Morocco, the English club said Sunday.

Kerr, who has scored 99 goals in 128 games for Chelsea, will be assessed by a specialist before beginning a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Kerr’s absence is a huge blow for Chelsea, who sit atop the Women’s Super League.

Reigning Olympic champion Alexander Zverev won his singles tie in an epic three-setter and then helped clinch the United Cup final for Germany in the deciding mixed doubles match on Sunday.

The sixth-ranked Zverev rallied from a set down to defeat the No. 9-ranked Hubert Hurkacz 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in a three-hour epic battle.

Then, playing his sixth match in three days, Zverev partnered with Laura Siegemund to win the mixed doubles 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 in a super tiebreaker against Iga Swiatek and Hurkacz.

Pitcher Sean Manaea is joining the New York Mets, agreeing to a US$28 million, two-year contract on Sunday. The 31-year-old left-hander was 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA last season with San Francisco, making 10 starts and 27 relief appearances.

Manaea is 65-56 with a 4.10 ERA with Oakland (2016-21), San Diego (2022) and San Francisco.
