CANADIAN SETS WORLD RECORD IN 400M

Christopher Morales Williams continued raising his profile on the U.S. university track scene this weekend.

The 19-year-old Vaughan, Ont., native set a world indoor record in the men’s 400 metres with a time of 44.49 seconds to win the NCAA Southeastern Conference indoor championships Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. If ratified, he tops the mark of 44.57 from American Kerron Clement in 2005.

The time also resets Morales Williams’ Canadian record in the event.

The University of Georgia sophomore had initially set the Canadian indoor 400 record at 46.05 seconds on Jan. 20 in Boston. He then reset that mark with 45.39 on Feb. 9 at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational.

Canadian linebacker Henoc Muamba has called it a career.

The 35-year-old made the announcement Sunday on his Instagram account.

He played in the CFL with Winnipeg (2011-13), Montreal (2015, 2018-19), Saskatchewan (2016-17) and Toronto (2021-23) while also spending time in the NFL with Indianapolis (2014-15) and Dallas (2016).

Muamba was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but grew up in Mississauga, Ont. The six-foot, 230-pound Muamba, the first player taken in the 2011 CFL draft, appeared in 135 career regular-season games. He recorded 610 tackles (35 for loss), 78 special-teams tackles, 17 sacks, seven interceptions, 14 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Muamba was named the MVP and top Canadian of the 2022 Grey Cup. He missed all of the 2023 season with a knee injury.

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is recovering from a broken collarbone and other injuries after crashing on the weekend in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad one-day race in Belgium.

Israel-premier Tech, Gee’s team, said the 26-year-old from Ottawa was forced out of Saturday’s 202-kilometre race after suffering a non-displaced left collarbone fracture. Gee also sustained a left-hand contusion and “light concussion.”

The cycling team said a decision on whether surgery is needed would come later.

Gee, who won the 2022 Canadian time trial national championship, is also an accomplished track cyclist, coming fifth in the team pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Canada’s best Olympic result in the event since 1932.

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was ousted Monday from the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, falling 6-4, 7-6 (5), 3-6 to Great Britain’s Andy Murray.

The native of Richmond Hill, Ont., had 15 aces but committed 10 double faults in the two-hour 32-minute match.

Shapovalov also had 44 winners compared to Murray’s eight but committed 18 unforced errors to his opponent’s five.

It marks the third tournament in a row Shapovalov has dropped out of in the first round.
