‘Victorian brick, high ceilings and stained glass accents combined with the owner’s clever melding of the old and the new and were tasteful, inclusive and a definite winner for potential buyers,” says listing agent Jillinda Greene.

When they bought the house, the owners say, it was the high ceilings and original trim that captured their hearts.

“It reminded us of the same trim from the family farm. We also liked how the original front stained glass window was preserved by the previous owners.”

The circa 1890 house has an open-concept main floor that includes a renovated cook’s kitchen with an eating/entertaining area and a walkout to a deck and backyard.

A family room, a spa bathroom and a laundry room are lower-level features. The full workshop has a walkout to the garden.

The lower level was dug down and finished. “One of the best investments we made was the radiant floor heating, which keeps it cosy even on the coldest winter days,” the owners say.

“We had the (exterior) brick cleaned and tuck pointed to restore the original facade. It restored the beauty of these houses that were originally for the families of the Grand Trunk Railway men.”

The owners say the renovations have been a labour of love. “We started with the kitchen about 18 years ago, then we put in a new staircase and moved the wall to open the living room. In 2014 we renovated the basement. Last year we put in all new hardwood flooring including in the basement and kitchen.”

The 15x130-foot property has a detached one-car garage off a laneway. “We really enjoy the time in our private backyard and put in new stonework,” the owners say. They say it’s been a “wonderful place to raise our children. We will take with us many memories of family gatherings, walking our girls to school (sometimes taking them in a toboggan) and trips to the beach.”

The owners say it is time to move on.

“Now that our kids are older, we think it would be nice for someone else to enjoy the home as much as we did.”
