MONTREAL’S AMBROSE LEADS PWHL’S TOP STARS FOR APRIL

-

Montreal defender Erin Ambrose, who led all players in scoring last month, has been named one of the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s top stars for April.

Ambrose had a goal and six assists in four games as Montreal locked up second place in the league standings and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Montreal teammate Laura Stacey was second with 10 points in April (three goals, seven assists) and was one of three forwards honoured.

Sarah Nurse of league-leading Toronto (league-best five goals in three games) and Ottawa captain Brianne Jenner (four goals in four games) were the other forwards named.

New York defender Ella Shelton (two goals, five points in four games) and Boston goaltender Aerin Frankel (two wins, one shootout loss) were also honoured.

Victor Wembanyama will return to Paris, he hopes as an Olympic champion, when the San Antonio Spurs face the Indiana Pacers in two regular season NBA games.

The teams will play on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25, marking the first time two regular season games will be held in Paris in the same season.

Wembanyama was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, when the 7-foot-4 Frenchman joined the Spurs from Paris-based team Boulogne-levallois.

Before that, Wembanyama is expected be one of the stars at the Paris Olympics, where France hopes to win the gold medal for the first time.

Two horses fell and unseated their riders in the second race at Churchill Downs on Thursday, two days before the historic track hosts the 150th Kentucky Derby.

Ridden by Irving Moncada, Territoriality clipped an outside horse’s hind heels and fell leaving the five-eighths pole, according to the Equibase chart notes. Vostra struck another horse and lost jockey Emmanuel Giles leaving the five-sixteenths pole.

Both loose horses were corralled by outriders and walked back to their barns.
