IOC advice to athletes: ‘Drink wisely’
LONDON • An International Olympic Committee spokesman has warned athletes to “drink wisely” after a night where alcohol and athletes made headlines at the London Olympics.
Police outside London reportedly arrested an Australian rower on Wednesday night after a storefront was damaged. Joshua Booth, a 21-yearold member of the men’s eights team, was said to have fainted and hit his head while in police custody. Two windows were reportedly smashed. Booth was arrested around 2 a.m., hours after his Australian boat finished sixth in the final. Canada won silver in the race.
The incident was raised at a daily news briefing with the IOC on Thursday.
“I think, without sounding like a parent — which I am — I’d say, ‘ Drink wisely,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.
Meanwhile, bradley wiggins, the British hero who followed his Tour de France victory with a gold medal in the men’s time trial on Wednesday, openly exhaulted his embrace of alcohol later that night. Wiggins posted photographs of his celebration on the social media website Twitter, and wrote: “Well what a day, blind drunk at the minute and overwhelmed with all the messages. Thank you everyone it’s been emotional X.”
Wiggins had skipped a big celebration after winning the Tour de France in order to remain focused on the Olympics.
“Bradley probably deserved a good celebration,” Adams said.
