TREATY TALKS

1 With the Idle No More movement off the front pages, the Assembly of First Nations will convene a National Treaty Forum Tuesday at the Dakota Dunes Casino at Whitecap Dakota First Nation in Saskatchewan. The AFN says the event “will provide an opportunity to reflect on recent developments, including the Prime Minister’s commitment on January 11, 2013 to a High Level Mechanism on Treaty Implementation, and determine how to direct next steps.” A draft agenda says the government has been invited, but not confirmed.

VINI VIDI VINO

2 The Grape Growers of Ontario hold an event Wednesday in the heart of Niagara wine country to announce the “State of the Grape Industry.” Awkwardly timed, wine wise, at 8 o’clock in the morning, the event is expected to detail how last year’s harvest set records in yield and quality, and how repeated cold snaps in January were very good for ice wine, a key export product.

CHURCH AND STATE

3 An Egyptian high court is to deliver a verdict Tuesday on the legal status of the Muslim Brotherhood, the political movement that produced the country’s current President Mohamed Morsi. A panel of judges last week recommended it should be dissolved for lack of legal status. Formed in 1928, and technically banned from 1954 to 2011, the Islamist movement nevertheless grew into a strong political force.

SALTY POLITICS

4 The Atlantic provinces spring into political action this week, with throne speeches, budgets, and the opening of legislatures in St. John’s, Charlottetown, Fredericton and Halifax. Newfoundland and Labrador will see a throne speech Monday, with a budget tabled Tuesday. Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia will see their spring sessions start Tuesday, with a PEI budget on Wednesday.

BLACKBERRY TEA LEAVES

5 A quarterly earnings report on Thursday from BlackBerr y, the smartphonemaker formerly known as Research In Motion, will be closely watched for clues about the fortunes of the new makeor-break BlackBerry 10 operating system. It will reflectt just one month of limited sales, which was launched at the end of January.
