Canadian Milos Raonic duplicated
his best career showing at the Sony Open on Saturday as he crushed Frenchman Guillaume Rufin 62, 6-4 to reach the third round. It was at this point a year ago at the 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., was unable to play against Andy Murray due to an ankle injury. The Montreal Impact pushed their
MLS seasonopening winning streak to four games as Marco Di Vaio got the only goal they needed in the 14th minute of 1-0 victory over the winless New York Red Bulls on Saturday. “We wanted to do bring the game to Montreal. We were doing that, but also give credit them credit,” New York goalie Luis Robles said. “Montreal is very organized and compact. There’s a reason they’re 4-0.” Montreal will try to make it five in a row next Saturday at Kansas City.

The Houston Dynamo didn’t get all the breaks
Saturday night, but they got enough to extend their home unbeaten streak to 27 matches. Warren Creavalle and Giles Barnes scored six minutes apart in the second half to help the Dynamo beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Saturday night. Houston’s home unbeaten streak is just two shy of Real Salt Lake’s Major League Soccer record of 29. The New York Yankees are on the verge
of acquiring former Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells from the Angels to help the Yankees through the first part of the season when the club will have four former all-stars on the disabled list. Wells will likely play left field while Curtis Granderson is sidelined with a broken arm. Multiple news outlets reported the deal, although it had yet to be finalized by Sunday night. Meanwhile, Derek Jeter will likely join Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Granderson on the star-studded disabled list for the season opener against Boston on April 1. Joe Weider, a legendary figure in bodybuilding
who helped popularize the sport worldwide and played a key role in introducing a charismatic young weightlifter named Arnold Schwarzenegger to the world, died Saturday. Weider, who was born in Montreal, was 93. Weider’s publicist, Charlotte Parker, told The Associated Press that the Weider died of heart failure. “He was the godfather of fitness who told all of us to be somebody with a body,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement posted on his website.
