-

Police in London, Ont., say a six-year-old girl is in critical condition following surgery for stab wounds and her mother has been charged with attempted murder. Police say officers arrived at the family’s apartment shortly after 9 a.m. and found the child suffering from several stab wounds, including what they described as a “serious” abdominal wound. The girl was taken to hospital where she under- went surgery. Investigators say her 29-year-old mother was arrested at the scene and is charged with attempted murder. She remains in custody pending a court appearance. Neighbours reported seeing the injured girl’s mother being taken to a cruiser in handcuffs, her bathrobe covered in blood, a flat expression on her face. Paramedics emerged from the building with the little girl on a stretcher, her head on a pillow. She looked like she was sleeping, one neighbour said. The girl attended St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary school, where a letter was sent home to parents. The school is bringing in trauma counsellors for staff and students.
