October 23, 1885 Painter Lawren Harris was born at Brantford, Ont. Born into privilege, Harris devoted himself entirely to art. A driving force behind the Group of Seven, Harris began his landscape painting career in northern Ontario and along the shores of Lake Superior. He was known for stark portrayals of nature before moving towards more abstract art. The Hammer Museum in California launched an exhibition of his paintings in October 2015.
