Leafs goalie tandem quieter
While the likes of James Reimer, Jonathan Bernier and even Ben Scrivens dealt with daily questions about supposed goaltending controversies in recent years, the Maple Leafs’ current tandem does not get quizzed about their one-two status.
That’s because Frederik Andersen, brought in on a five-year, US$25-million deal, is the undisputed starter, complimented by veteran backup Jhonas Enroth.
Their statuses are virtually set in stone this season, both men share quiet personas and there is far less outside noise surrounding the position these days.
“We really don’t pay that much attention to it if it’s quiet, or if there’s controversy,” Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly said. “But with these two guys, there hasn’t been. They’re both pretty soft-spoken, real good guys,” Rielly added. “They’ve been around long enough to know how this works, better than I do anyways. They’re getting along well, they’re doing a great job and we’re lucky to have both of them.”
Denmark native Andersen first met the Swedish Enroth at a goalie camp as a teenager and they have steadily been building their relationship since arriving in Toronto.
“We continue to build on that, getting to know each other,” said Andersen, who is one year younger than 28-year-old Enroth. “He’s a pretty quiet, calm guy, I guess like me. Pretty similar personalities. We’re not the loudest in the room. We kind of just do our thing and do our work.”
Notes: Nashville Predators defenceman P.K. Subban said his first game against Toronto in something other than a Montreal Canadiens jersey is “not weird. It’s just different. Still the same amount of reporters,” Subban said.
