ON THIS DAY
May 18, 1892 — Private John Bernard Croak, the first Victoria Cross winner from Newfoundland, was born in Little Bay, N.L. In August 1918, early in the Battle of Amiens, Croak bombed a German machine gun nest and singlehandedly captured the gun and its crew. Though wounded, he then led his platoon in a charge to enemy trenches. They captured three more guns and the defending garrison. Croak died soon after and was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
