Provinces need mutual support

-

Re: Cutting off B.C., letter to the editor, April 13

Letter writer Mike Priaro says Jason Kenney’s planned “turn-off-the-taps” legislation won’t work because “turning off the taps will make enemies of British Columbians and will turn them resolutely against Albertans and against any pipelines ever.”

As one British Columbian, I believe our provincial government’s position that Alberta has to send enough oil for our use but can’t sell to any other country demonstrates breathtaking hypocrisy. Not to mention Quebec, which demands transfer payments from Alberta while refusing to allow a pipeline and then buys its oil from Saudi Arabia. Hypocrisy is the worst of traits and unfortunately our prime minister sets a very low bar for the provinces to follow.

Provinces need to support each other to create a strong economy that in turn pays for the social programs and environmental protections we all want. Those against pipelines will always be against them until it affects them personally. I don’t believe they represent the majority of British Columbians. Jason Kenney’s strategy is sound if only to shine a light on this glaring double standard.
