Class size matters

-

Re: Does class size matter, Letter to the editor, April 16 I’m tired of people writing in saying that they were in a class of 40 and they’re OK. I grew up with classes of 30ish and I turned out OK but was completely oblivious to the struggling students around me.

I had a class a couple of years ago where 40 per cent of the class had arrived from China between two months to two years before. It was a difficult situation. If I had had 40 students rather than 30, the chances of reaching them would be less. Let’s not pretend that each class mix of students is equal. My students are perfectly behaved but what if they weren’t?
