POWER RANKINGS WEEK 7

- Dan Barnes

1. Winnipeg (1)

The Bombers haven’t been this good this early in a season since Bud Grant prowled the sidelines in 1960. Current head coach Mike O’Shea’s charges are good enough to win anywhere and in virtually any fashion.

2. Montreal (4)

The Alouettes found a way to overshadow the long awaited return of Postmedia beat man Herb Zurkowsky last week by beating on the Edmonton Eskimos. The team hasn’t been distracted by the ownership saga or the firings of either GM Kavis Reed or head coach Mike Sherman. They’re focused and rolling.

3. Hamilton (3)

Coming off a bye, the Tabbies’ offence will be tested by the Bombers’ stingy defence and the absence of Hamilton linebacker Simoni Lawrence, who begins serving a two-game suspension for a dirty hit on Riders QB Zach Collaros.

4. Edmonton (2)

For the second time this season, the Eskimos failed to find an end zone. And for the first time this season, Trevor Harris threw a pick. In fact, he tossed two of them. The game was up for grabs and Edmonton allowed Montreal to grab it.

5. Saskatchewan (5)

They beat B.C. last week. Everybody beats B.C.

6. Calgary (7)

They beat Toronto last week. Everybody beats Toronto. Even B.C.

7. Ottawa (6)

So that 2-0 burst from the gate was what, exactly? Through three straight losses, the Redblacks have barely exhibited a pulse. They don’t have enough depth at quarterback and barely have the ball on offence. Though they make some plays on defence, they’re still under water in the turnover battle. Sinking fast.

8. B.C. (8)

We are running out of ways to stress how bad B.C. is at protecting the quarterback and the football. They also take a lot of debilitating penalties. And their defence doesn’t cause nearly enough turnovers. On the bright side, they live in a lovely city.

9. Toronto (9)

There is no truth to the rumour that the CFL’s marketing slogan “Try Football” was aimed at the Argonauts. However, there is intense pressure building on an offence that is starting to pile up decent numbers of yards but doesn’t put nearly enough points on the board.
