Python could be on menus in Florida
The Florida health department is researching whether the state's invasive Burmese pythons are safe for consumption. As an apex predator — it has decimated the area's rabbit, fox, possum and raccoon — it may have accumulated high mercury levels. Believed to have been introduced after a pet owner released one, they grow to about five metres in length and can weigh 60 kilograms. American Burmese python meat sells online for US$80 a pound, making one snake
worth some US$10,000.
