ON THIS DAY
January 1, 1987
The town of Frobisher Bay, N.W.T, named after British explorer Sir Martin Frobisher, changed its name to Iqaluit. The Inuktitut word means “place of many fish.”
Many Inuit communities have since followed suit and officially reclaimed their Inuktitut names. Iqaluit was chosen to be the capital of the soon-to-be established territory of Nunavut in 1995. It is Canada’s most northern capital and the capital with the smallest
population.
