We the North: Auston Matthews gladly will buy into that slogan this NHL season, with the competition for the Toronto Maple Leafs featuring an all-Canadian flavour. “I think the Canadian division is probably the most exciting, just with all the fans and the pride that comes with playing with each team's individual city,” the Leafs star said. “It should make for some good hockey.” The Calgary Flames are the lone NHL team against which Matthews has not scored a goal. He has one assist in seven games. But in 52 games in total against the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets, Matthews has 63 points (36 goals and 27 assists). For Matthews, skating with Oilers superstar Connor McDavid during the off-season in the Phoenix area, along with Jonathan Toews, Matt Dumba and Anthony Duclair, was a relished experience.“(McDavid) is the best player in the league for a reason. It was great spending some time with him, being on the ice. We really enjoyed ourselves.”
