ON THIS DAY
January 8, 2013
Kenojuak Ashevak, an Inuk artist whose work became emblematic of the Canadian Arctic, died in her home in Cape Dorset, Nunavut at age 85. Ashevak was the first woman to become involved with
the newly established printmaking shop at Cape Dorset. Her father was a revered shaman who had a profound influence on her work, which often featured birds, bright colours, and bold lines. Ashevak was featured in a 2016 Heritage Minute, the first to be produced entirely in Inuktitut, as
well as English and French.
