REPORT URGES BROTHELS BE MOVED TO INDUSTRIAL ZONE
Britain's first official red light district is not working — with children being propositioned by men seeking sex or prostitutes offering their services — a report has found. The draft report, based on the views of 500 residents, has called for the red light district in Leeds to be moved to an “industrial area” away from families. Young children had been put at risk by needles from drugs and other litter and been exposed to the idea that “people are consumable commodities,” the report said. The red light district was launched in 2014 by the Safer Leeds partnership and is seen as a potential model by councils and police for safely managing street prostitution. Only 120 of the 1,940 residents responded to the survey, which researchers admitted was a “very poor” rate and meant “the findings cannot be taken as representative of the people of Holbeck.” A review last year said the scheme had “significantly improved” the health and safety of sex workers.
