February 4, 1885 – Canada’s first female senator, Cairine Wilson, was born in Montreal. A dedicated philanthropist, Wilson championed many social causes,
including those supporting women and refugees. From 1938 to 1948, she served as chair of the Canadian National Committee on Refugees. She was sworn in to the Senate on February 15, 1930, and served in the position
until her death in 1962.
