– Canada’s new flag was officially inaugurate­d in a ceremony on Parliament

Hill. Its adoption was the culminatio­n of many years of discussion­s, hundreds of designs, and the heated Great Flag Debate in Parliament. Before 1965, Canada did not have an official flag and instead used Britain’s Union Jack or the Canadian Red Ensign. The story of the creation of the new flag is told in a Heritage Minute.
