ON THIS DAY
February 16, 1970 – The Grey Cup trophy, stolen in December
1969 from the offices of the champion Ottawa Rough Riders, was returned to the Canadian Football League headquarters. With little fanfare, police had recovered the cup from a locker in Toronto’s Royal York Hotel after receiving an anonymous tip. Unwilling to pay the thieves the ransom they were demanding, the CFL planned to make a replica trophy if the cup was not
recovered.
