Remembering Christie
Re: The epitome of journalistic bravery, Rex Murphy, Feb. 12 What a wonderfully poignant piece Rex Murphy wrote on the first anniversary of Christie Blatchford's passing. I cried as I read it, because I so miss Christie. I cried because I mourn the gradual loss of our free speech. And I cried because Rex is another rare example of incredibly astute, brave writers whose writings I now cling to, hoping for all our sakes that they will never end.

Right with you there, Rex. Christie Blatchford's dedication, courage, compassion and brilliance should act as a beacon for any and all who aspire to a life of reporting and/or punditry.
Mary Lou Finlay, Toronto There are so many times when reading the news that I think, “Boy, I wish Christie Blatchford were here to comment on this!” Hers was always the first commentary I would read, and I miss her gutsy, insightful journalism.
It's probably not by accident that Rex Murphy's beautiful tribute to her was placed next to Marni Soupcoff 's piece on cancel culture. I think this has become the scourge of our times, and I know that Christie would be first in line to push back against the Twitter bullies.
So, here's a challenge to those of us who admired and respected Christie Blatchford: hold on to common sense, speak your mind, don't be afraid, and be kind. Susan Virtue, Etobicoke, Ont.
