ON THIS DAY
March 1, 1945
Second World War hero Major Frederick Tilston, of Toronto, earned the Victoria Cross. Serving with The Essex Scottish Regiment, Tilston and his company attacked a target in the Hochwald Forest. The major was wounded in the head while leading troops across open ground, yet he persevered and reached enemy lines. Tilston successfully organized a defence and left cover several times to deliver ammunition to his troops, refusing aid until he
could brief another officer.
