The Civil Marriage Act received royal assent, legalizing same-sex

marriage across the country. Canada became the fourth nation worldwide to do so, after the Netherland­s, Belgium and Spain. Two years earlier, Michael Leshner and Michael Stark had

become the first gay couple to marry in Canada after an Ontario appeals court ruled the practice

legal.
