The Civil Marriage Act received royal assent, legalizing same-sex
marriage across the country. Canada became the fourth nation worldwide to do so, after the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. Two years earlier, Michael Leshner and Michael Stark had
become the first gay couple to marry in Canada after an Ontario appeals court ruled the practice
legal.
