Abraham Kamerman, 45, of North Bay has been identified as the victim of a shooting Wednesday night in the Pinewood area.

Police believe it was not a random attack and there is no concern for public safety.

They are looking to identify a blue four-door compact Chevrolet seen leaving the area, along with two men.

The first is about 5-foot-10 with a slender build. He was last seen wearing a light-coloured sweater with a dark mask or toque. The second is medium in height with a slender build. He was last seen wearing dark clothing.

The firearm used in the shooting has not been recovered.

Police, including members of the emergency response team, responded to the call shortly before 9 pm.

Upon arrival, they found Kamerman in a residence suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital and shortly after arrival was pronounced dead.

Several armed North Bay police officers in SWAT gear had surrounded the house at the corner of Beattie and Vimy streets.

One neighbour reported Wednesday night seeing six police officers, an ambulance and firefighters at the scene. He said he heard shots fired.

“Police have their spotlights shining on a two-storey home and at least three police officers have their guns drawn,” another neighbour said.

“They ’ve placed large white tarps in the front and back yards.”

Interviewed Thursday, neighbour Ray Gravelle said he and his wife initially believed there were fireworks going off in the park behind their home Wednesday night. However, they quickly realized it was gunshots inside their neighbour’s house.

“I looked out my back kitchen window and saw a police officer with a rifle and then there was another officer with a weapon in the front. There were officers along the street, too,” Gravelle said Thursday morning while shovelling his driveway.

“It’s unbelievable that people live like that, but not surprising considering police are here all of the time.”

A few months ago, Gravelle said, one of the tenants at 889 Beattie St. was having a dispute with an officer and then went inside his apartment and starting lighting his furniture on fire.

“That house is a disaster,” he said. “It’s been a disaster since we moved into our home 16 years go.”

Gravelle said he’s witnessed countless drug deals over the years and isn’t surprised the situation has escalated.

“Four or five years ago, there was a stabbing there,” he said. “We see people going up and down the back stairs all of the time. Their customers don’t even have to knock, they just tap on the window and they get what they need.”

Const. John Schultz said there will be an increased police presence in the Beattie Street area as the investigation continues.

“At this time, interviews have been conducted and police continue to canvass the area for more information. The North Bay forensic identification unit is back on scene now that we are in daylight hours.”

Police are asking anyone with information involving this investigation to call 705-497-5555 and select option 9 to speak to a police officer.
