Is Canada’s goose cooked in China?
Canada Goose, founded and based in North York, is paying for its Canadian pride, in the wake of the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Chinese tech titan Huawei who was detained in Vancouver on Dec. 1 on suspicion of a possible violation of U.S. sanctions against Iran. Since the detainment, China’s embassy has protested against Canada and demanded her release; U.S.-China trade relations are back on thin ice; and Canada Goose, the iconic outerwear retailer, is facing boycotts among Chinese consumers. Over the course of Meng’s bail hearing in Vancouver, Canada Goose stocks dropped 20 per cent, and a new flagship in the tony Sanlitun district in Beijing has delayed its December opening.
