Chris Humby is hoping local bikers will gear up for a great cause on Aug. 25.

The St. Lunaire-Griquet biker is presently organizing the first annual “Just the Tip” Motorcycle Ride.

It will raise funds for the Kids Eat Smart program at local schools on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula.

Riders will depart from St. Lunaire-Griquet, travel to Roddickton, on to Plum Point, through the Straits region and will conclude the ride in St. Anthony.

This loop, along both route 430 and 432, will be approximately 350 kilometres.

Thus far, four bikes have registered. While Humby is hoping to get as many as possible, he says he would consider 10 bikes a successful event.

Humby hopes it will help entice more riders to visit the Great Northern Peninsula, highlighting the region’s great scenery.

In organizing the event, Humby was inspired by other fundraising bike rides in Gander, Stephenville and St. John’s.

“It’s a way to get together, to just enjoy the ride, have some fun and bring some awareness to a great program,” he told The Northern Pen.

Humby is well-acquainted with the benefits of the Kids Eat Smart program and chose to raise money to help ensure school children get a healthy meal.

He has two grandchildren currently attending Truman Eddison Memorial School in St. Lunaire-Griquet and one grandchild who will start this fall. His wife also volunteers for the Kids Eat Smart program.

The program provides three lunch meals at the school each week.

“These are great lunch meals, it’s a cost-saving for the parents,” he said. “It’s a great program. Every kid goes to school and after lunch goes back to class with a full belly. I think it’s vital.”

However, it costs money to run the program and it requires more volunteers.

Humby says the ride is both to raise funds and to create awareness that these programs can’t be done without volunteers.

Funds will be generated through sponsorships leading up to the event and other fundraisers.
