Rwanda comes UNdone
Canadian General Roméo Dallaire is assigned command of the 260-strong UN mission to Rwanda. He will find himself caught in the middle of a genocide that results in the systematic extermination of close to 1 million Tutsis by the Hutus. Dallaire begs for 2,000 more troops but is refused, and he and his soldiers can do little more than watch. Afterwards, Dallaire, who is credited with saving 20,000 Tutsis and receives several prestigious medals, blames himself for the UN’s failures. He later recalls the experience in a book and documentary, Shake Hands With The Devil: The Journey Of Roméo Dallaire, and is fictionalized as Nick Nolte’s character in the film Hotel Rwanda.
