FAIR­MONT HO­TELS AND RE­SORTS We asked all sorts of eth­i­cal busi­ness sa­vants who’d they’d nom­i­nate in this cat­e­gory, and again and again we heard some­thing that ini­tially sur­prised us. Turns out Fair­mont, the Toronto-based chain of world­wide luxury ho­tels, is tak­ing the green lead. Be­sides mak­ing sure ev­ery piece of pa­per, coat hanger and bar of soap from ev­ery room is reused or recy-

cled, Fair­mont Ho­tels has been retrofitting all its Canadian bath­rooms, in­stalling wa­ter- con­serv­ing shower heads, toi­lets and tap aer­a­tors for well over a decade now. More re­cently, it has en­sured that all or­ganic waste is com­posted and all golf cour­ses are be­ing ac­cred­ited as wildlife sanc­tu­ar­ies. Ev­ery prop­erty com­petes for an­nual trips and prizes for be­ing the green­est in the chain. The Lake Louise site even gen­er­ates its own wind and low-im­pact hy­dro en­ergy. And to help other ho­tels and busi­nesses catch up, Fair­mont put out a how-to green­ing guide with a for­ward by David Suzuki.
