(Travis Mathews, James Franco, USA). 60 minutes. Rating: NNNN Legend has it 40 minutes of gay S&M footage was cut from William Friedkin’s controversial 1980 film Cruising to avoid an X rating. Now Travis Mathews and James Franco have made a documentary about the filming of those lost scenes.
The pair cast Franco’s former acting class colleague Val Lauren in the Al Pacino role, which works well – and not just because of the physical resemblance. In the original, Pacino’s character is a straight police officer who uncomfortably goes undercover in NYC’s S&M scene to find a serial killer. Lauren, who’s also straight, is clearly unsure about his participation in the movie, which includes some graphic sex.
