LAST WOMAN STANDING

(Lorraine Price, Juliet Lammers, Canada). 88 minutes. Rating: NNN First-time directors Lorraine Price and Juliet Lammers succeeded in making a huge adjustment to a movie whose story had to change drastically.

The plan was to track boxers Ariane Fortin and Mary Spencer as they join Canada’s Olympic team, possibly to fight for gold in London. But Boxing Canada altered the rules in 2012 so only one of the women could compete, changing the film’s narrative arc.

What makes the doc work regardless is that it’s less about boxing than about whether a friendship can survive such intense athletic competition.

Sequences covering Spencer’s pre- Olympic makeover are exceptional. SGC Apr 26, 6: 30 pm, TIFF Bell Lightbox 3; Apr 28, 12: 30 pm, The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema; May 3, 1: 30 pm, TIFF Bell Lightbox 2.
