(Doris Dörrie, Germany). 86 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: NNN This portrait of female mariachi players in Mexico is a bit of a muddle. The movie starts by describing the difficulties women have breaking into this macho musical world. Yet even the most critical of them, María del Carmen, has a sup- portive all- male backup band, while others have stay-at-home husbands who make it possible for them to play. And there’s a weird dip at the end, when a band plays during the Day of the Dead.

But the female performers are dynamite, especially del Carmen and the older women who broke the barrier decades ago. Inspiring. SGC Apr 25, 3: 30 pm, Scotiabank Theatre 7; Apr 27, 7 pm, ROM Theatre; May 2, 7: 30 pm, Scotiabank Theatre 4.
