(Gabe Spitzer, David Terry Fine, U. S.). 51 minutes. Rating: NNNN ESPN’s 30 For 30 brand profiles its first golfer. That’s nothing to snooze at since the athlete in question is John Daly. He’s the mullet-haired rock star who brought fan culture to the sport after winning the 1991 PGA Championship with his unorthodox “grip it and rip it” swing. He’s also been fighting a long and hard battle with alcoholism and gambling, one of the reasons he’s filmed peddling merchandise in a Hooters parking lot.

Plenty of talking heads – some expert, some intimate – thoughtfully look back at the hysteria surrounding Daly, but the film’s charm comes from the man himself. He’s refreshingly candid and humble, refusing to tone down talk about his addictions or blame anyone else for his mistakes.
