Teams attracted to ceiling

According to data made public last week, the NHL’s $ 44- million salary cap has acted more like a magnet than a ceiling. Twenty- six of the NHL’s 30 teams now sport a payroll in excess of $ 40 million which means player costs and marketsizes are no longer inter- related. Those noted high rollers, the Buffalo Sabres, own the sixth- highest payroll in the league. The Dallas Stars, meanwhile, are 19th. The other reality of the new CBA concerns the player trade. Under the salary cap, it’s still possible to make a trade but it will be more like exchanging ledger lines than players.
