Wilson earns pole position

England’s Justin Wilson captured pole position for the Champ Car World Series Grand Prix of Portland, emerging Saturday with the top time from two days of qualifying. Wilson, eighth in the series standings, lapped the 1.964mile Portland Internatio­nal Raceway course in 58 seconds, clocking 121.903 m.p.h. during Friday’s provisiona­l qualifying. That time held up for the defending series runner-up through yesterday’s second round of qualifying. Rookie Robert Doornbos of the Netherland­s will start second after posting a time of 58.124 on Friday. Canada’s Alex Tagliani qualified fourth, beside France’s Sébastien Bourdais, while Toronto’s Paul Tracy qualified 13th.
